Honey Bee Disease Identification Cards, Carreck
Honey Bee Disease Identification Cards
A practical set of A6 laminated cards intended to be used in the apiary.
One card shows healthy brood, the other nine cards depict various pests, diseases and other conditions that may be encountered by the beekeeper.
Recent media coverage of worldwide honey bee colony losses has tended to suggest that their causes are new and beyond the control of the beekeeper. In practice, however, most colony losses continue to be due to causes which have been with us for many years. Some are avoidable, and others can be dealt with easily if they are recognised at an early stage. Whilst some honey bee pathogens such as most of the viruses do not produce distinctive symptoms that can be seen in the field, many conditions do produce very distinctive signs which can be spotted by the beekeeper through regular inspection of the combs.
This set of cards is intended to be used in the apiary. One card shows healthy brood; the others show various conditions that may be encountered by the beekeeper. Each card shows photographs illustrating the appearance of the affected comb, and a close up view to aid diagnosis. The reverse of each card provides a guide to diagnosis, information about the cause, and any action that can be taken by the beekeeper to deal with the problem.
These disease cards are a joint project between the Welsh Beekeepers Association (WBKA) and the International Bee Research Association (IBRA) with financial support being gratefully received from the Eva Crane Trust.
